Concussion Management & Information
The CR Sea Wolves Football Club is dedicated to player safety. Included in this is proper education regarding concussion and ensuring timely and appropriate management of any such injuries. Below you will find a presentation from our Medical Director Dr. Cory Niedjalski, a certified concussion management clinician, along with some additional information and a copy of our concussion policy.
Is concussion simply a sport problem?
Recent data confirms that it is not. 42% of all reported concussions in youth occur away from sports settings and there is an estimated 240,000 concussions annually in the US caused by motor vehicle accidents.
What are considered high risk sports for concussion?
Below is data on the incidence of concussion in sports where we have enough data collected. This is represented here as the percentage of athletic events (any practice, game, competition, etc.) that results in a concussion in each of the following sports.
-
Mixed Martial Arts - 14.7%
-
Australian Rules Football - 0.95%
-
Rugby - 0.47-0.9%
-
American Football - up to 0.5%
-
Women's Ice Hockey (non-contact) - up to 0.23%
-
Men's Ice Hockey - up to 0.16%
-
Women's Soccer - up to 0.14%
-
Men's Soccer - up to 0.08%
The difference seen in ice hockey shows us that contact sports may not pose more of a risk than non-contact sports. Importantly, most of this data is from 2011-2014 and since these publications we have seen a drop in concussion incidence across sports. This is especially so for contact sports due to policy changes such as regulations on allowable contact time in practice and other changes such as the Safe Contact initiative, which has been shown by a 2025 study to directly correlate with a decrease in concussion rates in youth Football.
The Bottom Line
-
Issues with concussion lie in its management, not with sports themselves
-
Concussion is not a serious injury if managed properly
-
When in doubt, sit them out - any suspected concussion must be treated as a concussion until proven otherwise and athletes must be kept out of their sport until cleared by a qualified professional
